Giovanni Antonio Canal (1697 – 1768), who is better known as Canaletto, was an Italian painter of city views (known as vedute) of mainly Venice, Rome, and London. He also painted imaginary views (referred to as capricci) and was an important printmaker using the etching technique. The Italian master is honoured with a major retrospective, the largest exhibition of Canaletto works ever to be held in Italy, at Rome's Museo di Roma at Palazzo Braschi. The Canaletto 1697-1768 Exhibition celebrates 250 years since the death of the Venetian painter who revolutionised landscape painting. The exhibition has taken more than two years to plan and features 42 paintings and nine drawings by Canaletto, along with 16 archive documents on loan from some of the world's most important collections. Visitors will be able to view all of his major pieces of work, including 'The Grand Canal, Looking Northeast towards the Rialto Bridge' and 'The Grand Canal near San Maria della Carità'; the first time that the two pieces have ever been exhibited together.
