Hadrian's Mausoleum (Castel Sant'Angelo in Italian) is Italy's fifth most visited tourist site and is located in the heart of Rome, on the city's left bank and overlooking the River Tiber. Commissioned by Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and family, it was built during the second century. The building was later used by several popes as a fortress and castle with tunnels that linked directly to the Vatican. It was once the tallest building in Rome and is now used as museum. Occasionally Castel Sant'Angelo is used as a venue to host exhibitions and festivals; one such festival is Sere d'Arte (Art Nights) which started on the 24th June and ends on the 25th September 2016. The festival encompasses a vast selection of music and theatre performances in the mausoleum's spectacular open-air courtyard. There is also special cinema screenings, conferences and unique guided tours, many of which visit parts of Castel Sant'Angelo that are not usually open to the public. See the official website of Sere d'Arte for more details and a full program.
