Balthasar Klossowski de Rola was a Polish-French modern artist born in Paris (29th February 1908), who spent most of his childhood in Berlin, Berne and Geneva. Better known as Balthus, he was one of the most original and enigmatic artistic masters of the 20th century; he often rejected the usual conventions of the art world and insisted that his art should be seen and not read about. Balthus always had a close affinity with Italian culture, having being influenced by Italian Magical Realism and being dazzled by the Tuscan Renaissance masters at an early age. He loyalty and passion was repaid when he was appointed as director of the French Academy in Rome (Villa Medici) in 1961, which lasted 17 years in total. The Balthus Exhibition takes place in two locations; at the Scuderie del Quirinale (Quirinal Stables or also Papal Stables) and at Villa Medici, until the 31st January 2016. There are almost two hundred works of art on show, including paintings, drawings and photographs, which have been collected from some of the world's leading museums and most prestigious private collections.
